This was inspired by a recent visit to one of the seven wonders of the world, Maasai Mara Game Reserve in Kenya. Read on and feel the wild wide wilderness.
Maasai Mara
by M.R Karugi
Vast plains abound far and near
The eye roves in the distance
Shimmering heat sends mirages
Dancing in the afternoon heat
The long grass sways, listless
Maasai Mara teems with life, wildlife
Across the Talek River, the eye sees
Buffaloes grazing, black and stocky
Casually swishing tails without a care
The lion pride can smell them from afar
But are too tired to hunt in the heat
Yawning endlessly biding their time
Under the acacia trees sits the lodge
Sorrounded by the raw bustling jungle
An oasis in the wild desert
Well manicured and rugged too
A respite from the heat and wild
A resting palace fit for the king
Topi, impala, hartebeest, gnu, crownbird
Hyena, leopard, cheetah, hippo, warthog
Jackal, rhino, bushpig, gazelle, vulture
Girrafe, elephant, zebra, wild dog,
Bush baby, ostrich, crocodile, monkey
We salute you all in your diversity
We shall endeavour to nurture you
And your habitat and form a really
Balanced flora that you shall continue
To live in and mesmerize us with all
Your beauty, elegance, poise and mystery
All for the better of our future
Human animal conflict shall abate
As we seek to give more respect
And love to God’s gift to Kenya
Undeserved but unreserved His giving
The Kenyan people and the world at large
Maasai Mara, teeming with life, wildlife
